Thank you for the update. I need help finding readers to markup or comment on a Draft MS. The novel is A Few Birds in Hell. How do I post the Table of Contents and allow readers to pick and choose their choice? Just exchange emails with mine and contact will occur. The novel is 23 chapters from C2/17 101st to C7/17 in Nam as Historical Fiction based on my recall of what we did. The fiction occurs with rearranging battles to fit the plot. Any thoughts appreciated? Regards, Chaparalle 6
Just stumbled on this site, you won’t remember me, but you might remember story. Myself and my German friend, Horst Kloss came with you from Campbell as C Trp 2/17, 101st. After filling sandbags at Enari and becoming 7/17, we approached you for a transfer out, saying we didn’t come here to fill sandbags and wanted out to go to an infantry unit. You chewed our ass out in a large way, told us that C Troop had plenty of action in front of them, told us to be in full field gear and we were going on patrol. We were picked up and included a 3-day patrol around the perimeter of Camp Enari. We both were scared shitless, but survived the experience. We both became observer in LOH and proudly served with you. Kloss and I later went to the 4th LRRP course, he went to the 173rd and I went on to the MACV Recondo school in NaTrang and let a squad of Blues under Major Ledford. Kloss and I are still friends to this day, he is a master violin repairman in Needham, Mass. and I live in Winchester, Ky and own my own business for 35yrs. Hope you remember this story, best to you and your family,, proud to have served under you

Colonel Frost, I think we ‘communicated’ several years ago and you may have been out of the States at the time. I saw Tommy Thompson’s post (have coffee with him several times a week) and wanted to renew my inquiry to you. Tommy received a Soldiers Medal (has the photo of the presentatiion), but never received any orders. I have been working for several years to try and get him the medal. Can you add anything to the story? Don’t know if you were there during that time or had moved on….

Col. Frost: I wrote you an email a year ago yesterday (2/27/15) regarding SGT. Tommy Thompson, who is my ‘airborne buddy’ in Winchester, KY. I am trying to witnesses or a copy of orders awarding him a Soldiers Medal. Do you have information that may be helpful. I live close to Ft. Hi Major Frost
My name is Jerry Stover 68-69. I was flying Door Gunner on your Command ship late 68 or early 69 . I believe flew in to refuel at LZ Versa I hooked up the grounding cables and started to start the generator and rockets started falling in on the psp around us. We flew out through it. Mighty hand of God got us out of there.
My co-worker, Richard Middendorf, was a member of C Troop in the late 60s/early 70s. He is getting ready to retire and I am planning to build a plastic model of an OH-6 to give to him. Where can I find some good photos of some of your birds? Thank you.
I remember you Randy. I was there at the same time. Good seeing your post. I’m looking around for Tim McCann and Bill Best if you hear anything. If you’d like to touch base write me.
Hey, Charlie Brown, I believe. I was just browsing through the Ruthless Riders Facebook page and I ran across a few of your posts. One was a comment about a picture of the armorer’s shack and some armorers at work. The top picture shows George “Daddy Rabbit” Wallace on the left and the guy on the right, with his back to the picture, may be Dale Dewitt. The bottom picture shows George Wallace, Bill Richards, and you Charlie Brown, squatting by the rocket pod.
I was there from Oct. 70 to Oct. 71 and Ted Cremeans was in charge of the Shack when I arrived. A couple of other armorers at the time were Gene Usrey and Jim “JK” Harper. Also, the officer who was in charge of our shack was WO-1 George Bivens. I’ve got some pictures of the gang somewhere. I’ll have to try to find them.
I’m William Baker (Tom). That was about the time I was there. My MOS was 68G Airframe repair, sheet metal, plastic, etc.I can remember lots of small things, but I’ve always been terrible with names. I spent some time with the ROC troops with other friends.
Hey Guys
Were you guys pilots ? I was an armorer from Oct. 70 to Oct. 71, mostly at Lane in An Son. Some of the guys I worked with were: ? Cummins, JK Harper, Charlie Brown, Dale Dewitt,
Bill Richards, George Wallace, Victor Charles, Sgt. Sabol, and Ken Canfield. Some of the pilots were Nelmmmson, Bivins and Lancaster ( he was killed in action ). I haven’t been in touch with anyone since 1972. Just nice to say “Hi!” to some guys who shared the same experience, so many years
ago.
I knew a man ,named Norm Benzing who passed away in2015 ,he has a friend who is telling stories about Norm being shot down three times in his chopper.I believe you had to be a warrant officer to pilot a chopper ,and that he used to shot elephants with his 50 cal. I was deployed U.S.Navy during Viet Nam . I don’t like people telling stories that are not true. Did anyone know Norm to collaborate these stories
Mr. Bregg sir,
First off, thank you for your service in the Navy.
Norm is my Father. Although he very rarely spoke about Vietnam and what he did there. He did occasionally tell stories of his time there.
As for the helicopter crashes. He showed my brothers and I photos of choppers, and him standing by choppers that he was in when the crashed. As for whether or not he was flying them. From my understanding he was an observer/ gunner. But he knew how to fly them and did on occasion.
He had told us stories of flying unmarked ships into Cambodia and stopping elephants that were being used to transport goods back and forth to the vietkong.
These stories are collaborated by photos and others that knew him.
I dont know any details about specific events or flights. Just the basic stories.
I hope this helps your curiosity as to the validity the information.
Capt Johnnie Garrett,
It has been a long time! I was the flight operations specialist who took care of the flight records for all the chopper pilots in our unit. Went by Goof 10. Our CO’s were Col Clyde Hennings (Clyde 6) and Major Allen. Based in An Son then went to Quang Tri in January 1971 for a few months then back to An Son. I was there from July 1970 to July 1971. Hope to hear from you.
hay mike just dot back to this sight i do remember allen we moved the troop to ka shon for 719 and i remember going to another place but the names just leave me when i laft i knew i wouldnt forget anything and now i cant remember anything i see bits of lane and it dosent ring a bell i just know our office was at the top of a hill
Joe Concepcion C Troop Scout 7/17 looking for a friend don’t remember his first name Valdez was his last name. The last time i was with him was in hospital had lost right hand and part of his right leg .
Joe!! Que gusto me da saber de tí. ¿Te acuerdas de mi? I have been living in Puerto Rico since 1973. I became a commercial photographer and practiced that for 45 years. Now I’m retired. Enjoying my 5 grandkids. I would love to hear from you again.Peace & Love Brother.

On 10 Feb 71 we had an AH-1-G take 13 hits, I think a 51cal though the rotor. It was slung out of Khe Sanh that day must be 327. It was flown by WO-1 George Bivens. BTW my memory is not that good, I kept a Diary.
Hey Steve,
I was an armorer with C Troop, 7/17th from Oct. 70 to Oct 71. AH-1G 66-15327 was shot down in Laos
on 2/13/71 and was flown by 1LT Stinson. Click on “About Us” at the top of the Ruthless riders Home page. Go down to “History” and click on “Written”. Then go down to “Jan to June 71” and scroll down to page 583 and 584. You can also go back to “Jan to June 71 – Aircraft” and scroll down to the list of C Troop’s AH-1G’s. It lists a few details there.
Stay well,
Gene
Randy,
I haven’t seen your posts or pictures before, it’s been a long time since I visited the C Troop site. Not sure why I did now, but I was Blue 6 for much of the time you were there (I was with C Trp from Dec 70-Aug 71). Your name didn’t immediately ring a bell, but when I saw your pictures, I remembered you were one of my lift pilots. I dug out my OD green note book to confirm. Your name was sprinkled throughout, mostly aircraft and crew assignments, etc. I think you had a DEROS date of July 4th. At least I think that is what that list was for. Also I think your “Greatpilot.jpg” name is Parmeter, though I can’t recall his first name now. But I agree, he was/is an excellent pilot. Also I think the 10th of Feb was also the day that Capt Jones was shot in the heel on the C&C Huey, I was flying right seat with him. We had been flying tree top level. After flying him back to Khe Sanh, I finished the day over Laos with Capt Wilson. But that was the last day we flew tree top level, after that we left the little birds at home and did our recon from altitude. There were just too many AK-47s shooting straight up down there, let alone all the big stuff. There was so much stuff down there that it was no problem finding target and accomplishing our mission from out of range of the small stuff.
Dick
Good to hear from you, my memory has failed me as well, I don’t recall what you looked like either. Right about my DEROS date. 10 Feb was the day I started my Diary, I wrote about a snake taking a round thru the rotor and you had a round hit inside your armor seat and lt. Hodges had a round blow his MG to pieces. It was start of scary times.
I was flying in the front seat of that snake in early February in 1969 that you mentioned in your November 16th post. My photos show where we took all of the round. We took a round in the oil cooler and I still have it somewhere around here. That was my second day in the air after getting to the unit.
I was a warrant officer. I also flew slicks for about 8-9 months before the end of my tour in Vietnam. I was in Vietnam from feb 1969 to feb 1970. where you a pilot?
Anyone have any information on AH-1G 67-15832 ? It is listed as “Lost to Inventory” (destroyed), in Laos, on 3/6/71. It belonged to C Troop 7/17th. I can’t find any incident report or who flew it. It is possible that it was hit, causing it to set
down at LZ Aluoi, in Laos, and later hit by mortars. However, I have found records of three different zone grids where this ship was destroyed. Anybody remember anything about this ship?
I will like to contact some of the soldiers that served on C Troop 7/17 Aircav from June 1970 to May 1971. Also were I could get the unit patch, banner, and crest
I came to c troop 7/17 from Ft Benning Ga in Oct 68 (, second tour) got promoted to E-6 and took over as the slick plt sgt, until Nov 69, do anyone remember me Charles Herring ( or Chuck )
I am looking for a pilot in c/troop a warrent nameed Curtis . I think it was his last name. I went through savanna Georgia with him. He sent
a letter to me telling me of my good friend Danny L L Deweys death in a LOH. I under stand it was his first mission orientation flight,
I would like to contact warrant officer Curtis class 69-49 to tell him how much that letter ment to me. I was WO1
Charlie Deach 192nd AHC Phan Thiet. Danny was KIA June 5th 1970. Thanks Charlie
Hello gentlemen!
I am looking for anybody with a picture or a memory of my friend George Bivens. He passed in 1991. I knew him for about ten years in the 1980s. Would be nice to learn more about his time in the Army.
Kind regards,

I knew George but not very well, I know he was a brave cobra pilot.
I’ve sent a copy of your post to a few guys who I know were close fiends, you may or may not hear from them.
If you don’t hear back from anyone else I have a copy of pictures of George I will share.
Maintenance Officer C Troop, 7/17 from June 1970 to June 1971… and Commander of the 410th Maintenance Detachment. We were the Troops who maintained everything for the troop. I was flying in the front seat of that snake in early February in 1969 that you mentioned in your November 16th post. My photos show where we took all of the round. We took a round in the oil cooler and I still have it somewhere around here. That was my second day in the air after getting to the unit.
Were you a lt. in the snake platoon? I believe we served together.

Hello gentlemen!
I am looking for anybody with a picture or a memory of my friend George Bivens. He passed in 1991. I knew him for about ten years in the 1980s. Would be nice to learn more about his time in the Army.
Kind regards,

I’ve sent a copy of your post to a few guys who I know were close fiends, you may or may not hear from them.
If you don’t hear back from anyone else I have a copy of pictures of George I will share.
Hello.
I am still on the Green side of the lawn.
Richard “Snappy” White
Maintenance Officer C Troop, 7/17 from June 1970 to June 1971… and Commander of the 410th Maintenance Detachment. We were the Troops who maintained everything for the troop. That’s why I was only Officer besides the CO that had his own jeep. Use to piss the RLO’s off that a CWO had his own personal Jeep. Thank you motor poor guys for keeping it running for me. Oh, yes, my room was the only one with air conditioning. Loved that Maintenance Officer’s Job… One draw-back… The 24 hour work days…
Ken Offerdahl and I are still in the same town when I’m not in Alaska flying. Can’t give it up
Was in C troop 69-70. Trying to create new user. Not sure how to on this site.
